We are falling in love with Hobart!

We first visited Hobart on a 2 week stay in 2022 and we loved our trip.  We loved it so much we cruised back there in April this year and we now have a 4 day weekend planned in just a months time.  

This time it will be winter so we are excited to see just how cold it is down that end of the country and how the place changes with the seasons.

I thought I would share what we are planning to get up to while we are there for this short visit (not as short as our last visit - 1 day in Hobart and 1 day in Port Arthur).

Day 1 (Friday)

We arrive at 10am and head to pick up our hire car at 11.

Lunch at Wicked Cheese and then onto Richmond (if time permits).

An afternoon Distillery tasting and tour at Spring Bay Distillery, Cambridge (this is perfect for us because it covers both gin and whiskey) 2pm.

Check in to our accommodation at 4pm (we are staying at Wyndham Seven Mile Beach).

Dinner at Barilla Bay Oysters at 6.30pm.  

Day 2 (Saturday)

8.30am Salamanca Markets, then onto Willie Smiths artisan markets.

Lunch at Willie Smiths Appleshed 1pm.

A drive up Mount Wellington (this will be weather dependent).

Dinner at Rockwall in Hobart.  This will be an off season 4 course set menu of local Tasmanian produce.

Day 3 (Sunday)

Richmond Bakery for breakfast

Ross (we will probably buy a vanilla slice which the town is well known for)

Oatlands - to complete the walking trail around the town and visit the Callington Mill Distillery (again, whiskey and gin).  Lunch at the pub if we are not too full!

Richmond - the pub for dinner (again if we are hungry)

Day 4 (Monday)

We don't have time for much today so we will head to The Margate Train for their delicious breakfast and maybe a stop for a walk around Hobart waterfront.

12pm Drop our car back 

2pm is our flight home.

This trip we are visiting some old favourite places but also trying some new ones.  I'm hoping that my itinerary leaves a little time to stop at unexpected finds along the way but we will see.  I'll let you know all about our trip when we return!

Bruny Island, Tasmania - What we did on our two day visit

During our Tasmania holiday we had one night and two days on Bruny Island.

We had a hire car and we caught the morning ferry over.  

When we arrived we headed towards the lookout.   On the way we stopped at the Bruny Island Honey shop and we stopped and had oysters at Get Shucked for lunch.  These were amazing fresh oysters - they are a must have when on Bruny.

Once our tummies were full we drove to the neck which is where the lookout is situated.  We were really lucky and had amazing weather for our visit so it was a lovely outlook once we got to the top.  It was quite busy.  There are also fairy penguins at the neck so you could return at dusk to see them however we didn't as our days were already full.

Next, we headed towards the lighthouse.  I had seen on a page I follow on Facebook about a small roadside stop called The Bruny Baker so that was our first stop and it did not disappoint!  The Bruny Baker sells sourdough loaves and Anzac slice.  I made sure we had cash so we could put money in the tin but I think they accept money transfers too.

We then drove on to the Cape Bruny Lighthouse.  I had booked a tour of the lighthouse prior to our visit and we ended up being the only two people on that timed tour which was perfect.  There was plenty to see from the top with 360 degree views and around the bottom there was the museum.  The road to the lighthouse was a long dirt road so you could only visit here if you are able to drive your car on dirt roads (hire cars).  We also needed to have a parks pass for our drive to the lighthouse.  We needed our parks pass for many of the places we visited in Tasmania.

For our stay on Bruny we chose 43 Degrees.  These were little individual cabins that were eco friendly. We really enjoyed out stay here.  They delivered a little pot of breakfast in the morning and our room included a complimentary bottle of wine.  This accommodation was perfect for us as it was close to our next day's adventure with Pennicott Wilderness Journeys.  We also got to see rare white wallabies close by which was pretty cool.

Our second day on Bruny Island started with our Pennicott Tour.  This was a 3 hour boat tour.  It was pretty amazing and I highly recommend it.  We travelled in a high speed boat.  One of the hi-lights for me was seeing the blowhole but the absolute hi-light was the Australian Fur Seals.  

This tour finished around lunch time so we started on our way back towards the ferry to the mainland.  We made sure to stop at the Bruny Island Cheese Company for a cheese platter for lunch.

                                                    

                                                     

We also stopped at Bruny Island Chocolate and bought a few treats for the trip home.

If you are visiting Tasmania definitely put Bruny Island on your list, it is well worth the visit.  

*If you are hiring a car in Tasmania you will need to check that you are permitted to drive on Bruny Island as there are a lot of dirt roads which are often excluded in rental contracts.
